A Long Gray Dragon

Arlanda Express

At the airport in Stockholm, our group from the University of Miami stepped into the Arlanda Express, a high-speed electric train. And in 20 minutes we were at the downtown train station.  The train is the fastest and most environmentally friendly way of travelling from the airport to the city.  It is beautifully designed.

From the outside, it looks like a long gray dragon with a bright yellow nose. Inside, it is spacious with double rows of high-backed, executive style seats, big picture windows framed in blond wood and, in some coaches, there is a counter with stools and small reading lamps where people can work at their computers.

On a panel at one end of each compartment, the train’s speed, the time of day and the temperature outside the train are displayed.  The display is similar to what we have in modern trains in China, where I come from.

The Arlanda Express can reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers or 120 miles an hour.  The train was developed in the early 1990s as traffic at Stockholm’s Arlanda International Airport was increasing and Sweden was struggling to reduce air pollution.

The train was inaugurated in November 1999 year.  Five years later the government of Sweden sold the train to an Australian company which operates under Swedish regulation. #
